The UK's charging network is bigger than you think

In 2026, the UK's public EV charging network surpassed 120,000 chargepoints across more than 45,000 locations. Every motorway service area in England now has at least six rapid or ultra-rapid chargers, and GRIDSERVE Electric Highway covers the full length of the M1, M4, M6, M25, M40, and M3 corridors. The infrastructure excuse for avoiding long distances in an EV has run out.

If you are planning your first road trip in your electric car, here is a practical guide to getting it right from the start.

Plan your route before you leave

Unlike petrol, EV charging requires a little forward planning on long journeys. You do not need to stress, but you do need to know roughly where you will top up. These tools make it simple:

  • Zap-Map (free, UK-focused) shows every public charger in the UK by network, speed, and live availability. Use the route-planning feature to drop pins at your start and end point and it suggests charging stops automatically.
  • ABRP (A Better Route Planner) is more precise: enter your car model and current battery state and it calculates exactly when and where to charge to avoid running low. It even factors in weather and elevation.
  • Your car's built-in sat-nav (on most 2022-and-newer EVs) will often handle this automatically, routing you to compatible chargers and preconditioning the battery before you arrive.

A useful rule of thumb: plan to charge when you drop to around 20%, and aim to leave each charger at 80%. You will spend the least time charging and stay comfortably inside your range.

Rapid vs ultra-rapid: which charger do you want?

Public chargers come in several speeds. On a long trip, you want the fastest charger your car can accept:

  • 7kW AC: Takes 6 to 12 hours. Fine for overnight destinations; not what you want at a motorway stop.
  • 50kW DC rapid: Adds roughly 80 miles in 30 minutes. You will find these at most service areas and retail parks. A solid option for most drivers.
  • 100 to 150kW DC ultra-rapid: Adds 100 to 150 miles in 20 to 25 minutes. Standard at GRIDSERVE Electric Highway and bp pulse premium hubs.
  • 300kW+ DC ultra-rapid: Found at dedicated EV hubs including GRIDSERVE and Osprey. Supported by the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, and a growing number of others. Can add 200 miles in 15 to 20 minutes.

Check your car's maximum DC charge rate in the manual before your trip. A car that accepts 50kW DC will not charge faster at a 300kW charger; it will simply use 50kW of that available capacity.

Which apps and accounts do you need?

This is the part that trips up first-timers. The UK has multiple charging networks, each with their own app or payment method. The good news is that most major chargers now support contactless pay-as-you-go, so you do not need a pre-registered account to use them.

That said, membership accounts are cheaper on most networks. Worth setting up before you go:

  • GRIDSERVE: Contactless accepted; the GRIDSERVE app gives you live bay status at Electric Highway sites.
  • bp pulse: The bp pulse app unlocks member pricing, often around 20p less per kWh than ad-hoc rates at the same site.
  • Pod Point: Common at Tesco, Lidl, and Asda car parks; often free to use while you shop.
  • Osprey Charging: A growing UK rapid network with contactless accepted at all sites

At the charger: a first-timer's checklist

  • Arrive with at least 10 to 15% battery remaining. Do not push it to zero.
  • Park fully in the marked bay, not just close to the charger post.
  • Check the cable connector type matches your car's port before plugging in. CCS and Type 2 cover the vast majority of UK EVs.
  • Wait for the charger screen to confirm the session has started before walking away.
  • Move your car promptly once charged. Leaving it plugged in beyond 80% at a busy rapid site wastes a bay other drivers need
             

What if a charger is broken?

UK charger reliability has improved significantly, but faults do happen. If a charger fails:

  • Try another bay at the same site before assuming the whole site is down.
  • Report the fault via the network's app or the number on the charger unit. Most networks have 24-hour helplines.
  • Zap-Map's community feature lets you mark a charger as out of service in real time, helping other drivers plan around it.
  • ABRP will suggest an alternative stop if you enter a lower-than-expected remaining charge level
           

New UK Consumer Duty rules for EV networks mean operators are now required to publish reliability data publicly. Aim for sites with 95%+ uptime ratings on Zap-Map when reliability matters most.
