The question every new EV driver asks

You set up your new home charger, plug in on the first night, and then pause. Should you let it charge all the way to 100%, or set it to stop at 80%? You have heard both arguments. Your neighbour says 80. Someone in an EV forum says 100 is fine. The car manual says something different again.

Here is the straightforward answer, and the context that makes it make sense.

Why 80% gets recommended so often

Lithium-ion batteries are happiest in the middle of their charge range. The chemistry inside an EV battery undergoes slightly more stress at both extremes: very low (below 10 to 20%) and very high (above 90 to 100%). Keeping the battery between 20% and 80% for most of its life reduces that stress and, over many years, slows the gradual decline in maximum capacity that all lithium batteries experience.

This is why most manufacturers set a default charge limit of 80% on new vehicles, and why smart home chargers allow you to set a maximum charge level from the app.

  • Tesla: Recommends 80% for daily use, 100% before a long trip.
  • Volkswagen (ID.3, ID.4): Recommends 80% for regular overnight charging.
  • Nissan LEAF: Recommends 80% (or its equivalent Long Life Mode) for everyday use.
  • Hyundai and Kia: Recommend 80 to 90% for daily, with 100% for longer journeys.

A large-scale UK used-EV battery health study published in early 2026, covering over 8,000 vehicles across 36 brands, found that cars with consistent mid-range charging habits showed better retained capacity over six to eight years. The average battery state of health across the dataset was still a reassuring 95.15%, but the spread widened significantly with older vehicles that had been charged to 100% regularly for years. When 100% is actually fine

The caveat matters: charging to 100% occasionally will not ruin your battery. Modern EVs have a Battery Management System (BMS) that protects the cells from true overcharging, and manufacturers build in a small buffer at the top and bottom of the displayed range. What shows as "100%" on your dashboard is not actually 100% of the battery's chemical capacity.

Top up to 100% when you genuinely need it:

  • The night before a long motorway trip where you will be relying on public rapid chargers en route.
  • You are doing more miles than usual and 80% will not be enough to reach your destination and return.
  • Your car manufacturer specifically states 100% is acceptable for long-term daily use. Some vehicles have a BMS designed to make 100% safe every day.

The key is not leaving a full battery sitting unused for a long time. Charging to 100% overnight and then leaving the car on the drive all day is more stressful on the cells than charging to 100% and driving off within a few hours.
