Big news for EV drivers across the UK – and especially for anyone without a driveway.
On 13 July 2025, the UK government announced a £63 million investment aimed at supercharging the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, breaking down charging barriers, and helping more families, businesses and the public sector transition to greener transport.
Here at Plug In Stations, we’re excited to see this level of support being rolled out nationwide. It directly addresses some of the most common challenges we see on the ground – particularly when it comes to accessing charging at home and supporting fleet electrification for organisations like the NHS.
A major focus of the new funding is helping households without driveways to access cheaper charging. The new £25 million local authority scheme will support cross-pavement charging solutions, allowing homeowners to run safe cabling beneath pavements from their home to their parked EV.
This will open the door for thousands of households to tap into low-cost home electricity rates – potentially saving up to £1,500 per year compared to petrol or diesel. With charging costs as low as 2p per mile, it’s a game-changer for urban and suburban areas where off-street parking isn’t available.
As infrastructure specialists, we know how transformative these local schemes can be. If you're a local authority or homeowner looking to explore new solutions, we’d love to speak with you.
More than 200 NHS sites across England will benefit from £8 million in funding to upgrade their fleets to electric vehicles. That includes ambulances and other medical transport – reducing emissions and cutting long-term running costs.
With over 1,200 new charging sockets being installed, the NHS could save millions on fuel and maintenance over the next 20 years – money that can go directly back into frontline care.
We’re proud to work with public sector organisations making the switch and would be happy to support any Trusts looking for guidance on fleet transition, depot charging, or funding opportunities.
A new grant scheme is also being launched to help businesses install EV chargepoints at depots – ideal for supporting fleets of HGVs, vans and coaches.
With over 1.2 million people employed in logistics and freight in the UK, this move is designed to support industries that keep the country moving, while preparing them for a zero-emission future.
Have you ever found yourself wondering where the nearest EV charger is while on a long journey? You’re not alone.
That’s why another big announcement is the introduction of official EV charging signage on major A-roads and the strategic road network. Until now, even major charging hubs have often gone unnoticed – but with new signage, drivers will be able to find charging locations more easily, increasing confidence in EV travel.
At Plug In Stations, we welcome this move as part of the wider effort to make charging more visible, accessible and normalised for everyone.
These new investments build on over £400 million already spent on the UK’s charging infrastructure, alongside £6 billion of private sector investment committed through to 2030. The result? A growing network of over 82,000 public chargepoints, with more added every 30 minutes.
This is more than just about infrastructure – it’s about supporting British families, creating green jobs, and ensuring the benefits of EV ownership are open to everyone.
