Getting a home charger fitted is far simpler than most people expect. For a standard install you are usually looking at half a day, with very little disruption. Here is the whole process, start to finish, so there are no surprises.
Before the day: the survey
Every good install starts with a survey, often done remotely from a few photos and a short questionnaire. We are checking the things that decide a safe, tidy job:
- Your fuse board (consumer unit) and the spare capacity in it
- The rating of your main incoming fuse, which tells us whether load management is needed
- Your earthing arrangement
- The best cable route from the board to where the car parks
- Wi-Fi reach at the charger location, for smart features and tariff control
What we sort behind the scenes
Before we arrive, we notify your local network operator where required, and we handle any grant paperwork so the discount is applied for you. You do not need to chase anything.
On the day, step by step
- We isolate the power safely before any work begins
- We mount the charger exactly where you agreed in the survey
- We run the cable along the planned route, clipped neatly or in trunking for a clean finish
- We fit the protective devices the charger needs, including its own isolator and circuit protection
- We sort the earthing. Most modern chargers have built-in protection that removes the need for an external earth rod
- We connect into your consumer unit
- We power up, test and commission the unit to make sure everything is safe and working
- We set up the app, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and walk you through your first charge
How long does it take?
A typical home install takes around three to four hours. More involved jobs, such as a long cable run or a board upgrade, can take longer, and we will always tell you in advance if that is the case.
What we need from you
- Clear access to your fuse board and the parking spot on the day
- The car space kept free so we can position the charger correctly
- A quick decision on charger placement if it was not finalised at survey
- Your Wi-Fi password for the smart setup
After we leave
You drive away (or rather, stay put and plug in) the same day. Your charger is covered by its manufacturer warranty, the app lets you schedule cheap overnight charging, and we are on the end of the phone if you ever need us.
